Theater Double Feature–This Monday!

Timeless

Hey Club!

This Monday, March 22nd, we’re going to be hosting an anime double feature in the SUB Theater. We have the movies Escaflowne and Urusei Yatsura: Only You ready to screen, so come by at 5:00pm and treat yourself to some anime while you get back into the swing of Spring semester! There’s zero admission fee, and we’ll have a raffle and prizes for those who show up, so you’re gonna have a hard time justifying NOT going. Here are the basic details… We’ll see you all there!

Escaflowne: The Movie
5:00pm

Hitomi Kanzaki is in a very depressed mood. She only wants to sleep and fade away. Her misery summons Lord Folken who sends her to Gaea. The people of Gaea think she is the Wing Goddess, who can call upon the legendary Dragon Armor called Escaflowne. On Gaea, King Van, the sole survior of the White Dragon Clan, is also in a depressed state. Swearing an oath to get his revenge on the Black Dragon Clan that oblierated Van’s kingdom, he lives by the sword. Now that the Wing Goddess has finally appeared, she posseses Gaea’s world fate in her heart. Escaflowne will either lead Gaea to peace or total ruin.

Urusei Yatsura: Only You
7:00pm

When he was still a young boy, Ataru accepted a marriage proposal from a strange girl he met at the playground, but quickly forgot about it when she left and never came back. Now the mystery girl has come back for her fiance – with the military might of an entire planet behind her. As Ataru gleefully travels to Planet Elle to meet his new wife, Lum leads the rest of the cast in a mission to get him back at any cost.

Santa Fe Jin! The Last-Minute Field Trip?!?

Hey all!

I know… SUPER short notice, but because club is cancelled this week, and because it’s the beginning of Spring Break, we’re going to kick it off with a field trip to the Santa Fe Japanese Cultural festival! The quick and dirty details are as follows:

We meet up in the SUB Atrium at 9:00am sharp, then make for the Alvarado Transportation Center via Rapid Ride ($1.00 if you don’t have a bus pass). After we’re there, we catch the 9:34 Rail Runner up to Santa Fe for the Cultural Festival! We’ll leave Santa Fe at 6:30pm and get back around 8:00pm in the evening. It’s gonna be a blast!

Tickets for the Rail Runner are $4.00 round-trip if you’re a student and you buy online (if you show up at the club officer between 8:30am and 9:00am and we can purchase and print them out for you!), or $7.00 on the train. Not sure if there’s admission yet, but you should bring extra money anyways for food and what-not. More details follow the break!

Let’s do FANIME! Again!

fanimecroppedHey Club!

We’ve decided and announced Fanime stuff at the meetings, but if you haven’t been (or even if you have), this post should serve you well. Collected here are all the details we now know about our summer Convention trip. Dates, times, costs… all that minutia that you need to know in order to come with us! Last year, we had over 25 participants, and we all had an amazing time! Wanna be a part of our annual summer con trip this year? Read on!

(In brief, it’s important to note that the day we’re taking deposits for Fanime is tomorrow - February 13th! The deposit amount is $55, and even if you can’t get it to us yet, we need you to let us know if you’re planning on coming before next Tuesday – tomorrow’s meeting is probably the best time to do that, or you can email us: anime@unm.edu. Again, deets after the break!)

First Meeting of the Semester!

Hey Clubbers!

Anime Club is back this semester with BIG plans! To give you a taste of what’s lined up: we’ve got field trips, maid café, game days, dances, karaoke, jeopardy, coloring, fandubbing, cosplay, J-Dramas… and if that’s not exciting enough, we’ll be doing no less than SIX anime movie screenings in the SUB theater! Membership is as valuable as ever!

We’re kicking it off this Saturday with our Post-ALA, Pre-Las Cruces Anime Day Con meeting! We’ll reflect on our trip to Los Angeles, and plot next weekend’s excursion to Southern New Mexico! Also, discussion/debate on which con we should go to come summertime, FANIME or A-Kon?

We’ll also be changing up our anime screenings, with 3 NEW series EVERY WEEK! Instead of our old semester-long series commitments, we’ll watch what’s fresh and keep on with what we like. This will allow for a ton more reflexiveness with re: to what we show (and less stagnancy).

It’s all for you guys, and we can’t wait to see you all back this Saturday from 4-8 pm in the SUB 3rd floor; Room Lobo A/B! Hit the break for some hints of what’s in store for the meeting, anime-wise:

Signs of Life

sleep

We’re alive.

SO! A lot’s happened since last we updated, and a lot’s on the horizon. I’ll try and cover most of the past stuff… the e-mail later tonight should highlight the future stuff. Ready? Ok, go!

First off, ALA. As any attendee will assuredly attest to, we had a great time at the con, and on the way there and back . Several of our members cosplayed, and we all came back with many a souvenir. I didn’t take too many photos (fail, I know) but luckily, David was there to pick up the slack! The ALA gallery is after the break.

Secondly, our elected treasurer Rob won’t be assuming his office this semester due to school, work, and related stresses. But it’s aaaaawwwwright, since former treasurer Kim has agreed to retake the position for this semester. It’ll be like she never left!

Thirdly, we won’t be doing the Lunchtime Fun Hour this semester… we’re trying to create a more work-centered environment in the Lair, so our office policy is changing from ‘open door’ to ‘please knock’. That’s not to say you’re not welcome to come by, say “hi,” and chill a while — you are! — we just need some time to be productive too. >_< Office hours will be posted next week, as soon as we figure them out.

Um. Lastly, I wanna announce a change in how we screen anime. This semester, instead of watching an entire season of a series, we’ll be featuring new anime every week… THREE new anime series to be exact. And if you’re interested in watching more–the titles will be available in our library! This is monumental… new anime every week? Why would you ever miss club? :p

Anyhow, it’s good to be back, and I’ll be looking forward to seeing you all this Saturday, 4-8 in Lobo A/B as usual! Be there!!!

Tokyo Godfathers – Impromptu SUB Screening!

Hey Club!

If you’re vigilant enough to catch this before 2:00 pm Monday, November 30th, you should head down to the SUB Theater for a FREE ANIME MOVIE SCREENING! We realize that this falls in the realm beyond last-minute notice, but we’re mainly doing it to prove to ourselves that we can, what with out last two botched attempts at utilizing the theater for anime purposes…

Ahem! Tokyo Godfathers is a holiday film by Satoshi Kon – a perfect anime kick-off of to the Christmas season. Here’s a description of the movie, taken from AniDB.net:

In Tokyo Godfathers, three homeless people – Gin, a former professional bicycle racer; Hana, a transvestite; and Miyuki, a run-away young girl – live together in Shinjuku, Tokyo. On Christmas Eve, the three discover a baby girl at a garbage dump. They head for the brighter parts of the city, where people are enjoying the holiday festivities, to look for the baby’s parents. While the three search for the parents, uncanny luck results in their meeting other people while their adventures with the baby continue. Will the baby lead these three protagonists to their destiny? This small adventure lets each of the trio confront their own lives, which they almost threw away, while maintaining their dignity and happiness under unfortunate circumstances.

It’s a great movie – so you should come watch! Bring your pals! Again, that’s 2:00pm in the SUB Theater; Monday, Nov. 30th.

We’ll see you there! Continue reading ‘Tokyo Godfathers – Impromptu SUB Screening!’

Officer Elections this Saturday!

Yeah. Elections for the Spring/Fall 2010 semesters are tomorrow! Come and vote for the future of Anime Club! You’ll need to be a paid member to vote, but we’ll be doing last minute sign-ups before club if you still wanna turn in your dues!

On tap for election day, we’ll have our regularly scheduled anime, the presidental debate, and a short speech session before each position is voted on and decided, so you guys know what each candidate is all about. We’re gonna end it all with gender-bending anime, Kampfer. Yeah.

Before I jump into election stuff, I thought I’d share some good news with you all! Our appropriation bill went through, so for those of you going (or interested in going) to ALA this Janurary – we’ll be giving you a discount from our original quoted price of $150 – it’s now only gonna cost $100 per person! Amazing, right? Anyways – if you want to sign up to the trip in light of this information, let us know!

And without further adieu, this Saturday’s schedule (and the officer candidates).
