UNM Anime Club is one of the largest Special Interest Student Organizations at the University of New Mexico. Founded in 2005, Anime Club serves its membership by providing a weekly venue where attendees can meet and interact with like-minded individuals while engaging in Anime, Video Games, and other “nerdy” activities.

We meet every Saturday from 4 – 8pm on the 3rd floor of the UNM Student Union Bldg.

Parking on campus (any lettered lot; a, b, c, d, etc.) is FREE on Saturdays.

In addition to weekly screenings of Anime (shorthand for Japanese Animation) and our ever-present Game Room–which plays host to TVs, video game systems, and tables for cards and board games–Anime Club also puts on weekly special events. Here are some examples:

• Nostalgia Day: Fueled by complimentary juice boxes and cookies, our members color anime and manga line art in crayon while partaking in the cartoons of their past, such as Pokemon, Sailor Moon, and Dragon Ball Z.

• Field Day: Our once-a-semester outdoor potluck where members chow on freshly barbecued Terayaki beef and chicken and goof around with frisbees, softballs, kites and the like. We’ve also done treasure hunts and impromptu “Tag” in the past–who knows what might happen with Otaku in the sunlight?

• Theater Screenings: A few times a year, we’ll put on animemovies in the Student Union Bldg’s basement theater. These special showings are accompanied by concessions and door prizes for a rare experience: anime on the silver screen.

• Cosplay Contests: Dozens of clubbers don their favorite character outfits and compete for popular vote during our cosplay events. In addition to dress-up days, we also have occasional costuming guests and workshops for those new and old to the craft.

• Karaoke Nights: If your vocal chords are looking for an excuse to belt some tunes, Anime Club Karaoke Nights are some of the best opportunities you’ll find! We do both American and Japanese songs–and we top off the eve’n with drinks! Good times, guaranteed!

• Game Day: Every once in a while, we’ll put away the anime projector and bust out the tables for Game Day, an event where we’ll play tabletop strategy, on-screen fighters, and anything else our members bring to share. Anime Jeopardy also makes an appearance at this well-liked event.

• Craftan’ Day: Origami? Calligraphy!? COOKIE DECORATING!? Once a semester we flex our imaginations and come up with some awesome creations. We’re thinking of a chalking contest to go along with the next one. It’s bound to be boundless amounts of fun.
