Our biggest event last semester was, without a doubt, our twice-held Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament. Well, it’s back… and we’re keen on making the tourney our best yet with some new rules, some great prizes, and – as always – lots and lots of fun and competition to be had!
Here are the basics:
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl Singles (1v1) Tournament; semi-competitive.
- Held Saturday October 4th, 2008 in Lobo A/B; 3rd Floor of the UNM Student Union Bldg.
- Registration begins at 2:00 pm and goes through 3:00 pm, which is when match play starts.
- Entry fee is $5.00 per player. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 competitors.
As for the rules:
- 3 Stock Match Play
- 8 Minute Time Limit
- Items set to Off and None
- Double-Elimination, Best 2 out of 3 for qualifiers; Best 3 out of 5 for finals
UPDATE: As per popular request, we have changed the bracket structure to Double Elimination. Also, Rainbow Cruise removed from counterpick selection. These will be the last changes to the tournament.
More details and rules follow the link:
Match progression:
1. Players choose their characters in a double-blind fashion.
2. Each player may ban a stage for the match from the counterpick selection.
3. First game on a random, neutral stage.
4. Loser chooses their counterpick stage.
5. Winner chooses their character.
6. Loser chooses their character.
7. Next game is played.
8. If a third game is necessary, repeat steps 4-7.
Additional Rules:
- Players are responsible for their own controller/control scheme and name tag, and should confirm settings before the start of the match.
- In the event of a dispute, controller ports will be decided by Rock, Paper, Scissors.
- In the event of time expiry, the winner is chosen by by lowest percentage instead of sudden death.
- Any action that can prevent the game from continuing (i.e., freezing, disappearing characters, game reset, etc.) will result in a forfeit of that match for the player that initiated the action.
- Stalling is banned (i.e. the act of deliberately avoiding any and all conflict so that one may make the game unplayable).
Character-Specific:
- Metaknight’s Infinite Cape glitch is banned.
- If a game ends with Bowser doing his suicide klaw and it ends in sudden death, the sudden death will be ignored and that game will count as a win for Bowser.

“If a game ends with Bowser doing his suicide klaw and it ends in sudden death, the sudden death will be ignored and that game will count as a win for Bowser.”
Can we expand that to apply to Kirby’s suicide move?
Which one? Sucking them in and jumping off? That depends, since unlike bowser’s move, it isn’t a guaranted ko or even a guaranteed suicide. It it still possible to break out and recover, so it might depend on how far down you managed to get and what characters where used. Ie, pretty low but the captive is pit, or didn’t get down very far when the timer ran out so as not to give the opponent the chance to button mash their escape to saftey, etc.
And I don’t think you can do kirby’s throw off the edge anymore… can you?
I have a question. A brother of mine is interested, but I’m wondering, is there an age limit?
No, there’s no age limit. You simply have to be old enough to be able to play the game on your own.
And there’s no such thing as too old for video games either! =D
Mael: I’m just wondering about the “Ignore sudden death” bit. The suicide klaw is just as much bullshit as Kirby’s kills. If the game decides to do it more fairly, why both mess with it?
Book: This link tells you the logic behind it.
Basically, a character grabbed by Bowser can directional influence his way out of certain death if he’s at a lower percentage. So a death by suicide klaw connotes that the Bowser had the lower percentage of damage and is thus the winner?
I’m not 100% sure either, but it’s the official Smash Boards stance, and I feel I can appeal to their authority, at least in this case.
As of yet, I haven’t seen anybody get out of the bowser klaw… And besides, it coincides with what would have happened had they both been at one life left and did that with time to spare- opponent would have died first and Bowser would have won. And you know I’ve gotten out of kirby’s grasp many a time.
This looks good, watch out for my Ike everyone!
Hey so the character selection, is it going to allowed for both players to be the same character? Also the maps listed above are all that will be used in the tournament right?
King Lerke: For the first game of each match, character selection is double blind, so you won’t know your opponent’s character and he won’t know yours. But for the next games in that match, the loser will be able to choose his character after the winner; it’s their prerogative if they’d like to pick the same guy.
And yes, the maps listed above are all that will be played on. See you Saturday!
